Short Description of Instrument
The STOP-BANG Questionnaire is an 8-item self-administered questionnaire that assesses the risk of obstructive sleep apnea. It was designed in a yes/no format and includes 8 questions related to snoring, daytime sleepiness, stopped breathing during sleep, and hypertension. The acronym represents the way the questions are presented: Snoring, Tired, Observed, Blood Pressure (STOP) and Body Mass Index, Age, Neck size, Gender (BANG).
Scoring and Psychometric Properties
Scoring:
Low risk of OSA:
Yes to 0-2 questions
 
Moderate risk:
Yes to 3-4 questions
 
High risk:
Yes to 5-8 questions
Yes to 2 or more of 4 STOP questions + male gender
Yes to 2 or more of 4 STOP questions + BMI > 35 kg/m2
Yes to 2 or more of 4 STOP questions + neck >40cm or 16 inches
Rationale/Justification
Strengths: Simple, fast and easy to be completed.
Weaknesses: it is an estimation of obstructive sleep apnea and may be used as a screening phase as the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea is done by polysomnography. Not widely used in PD.
